Let me know your thoughts on Wytchwood in the comments below! If gathering, crafting, and story-driven games are something you like, then Wytchwood is probably a game you will enjoy. The narrative’s dark humor and the clear inspiration the developers took from fairytales and folklore really hit a sweet spot for me. Honestly, Wytchwood is almost worth giving a try for the gorgeous visuals alone, and, although I wouldn’t say the story was phenomenal, I did enjoy it. While the game’s gameplay loop is repetitive, I tended to find it relaxing instead of tedious. Overall, I enjoyed the time I spent in Wytchwood‘s dark, fairytale world. I’ll admit that running all the way back to the swamp just for one mosquito stinger can be a real pain in the behind. And this is where much of the frustration kicks in. This gather, craft, repeat formula is pretty much Wytchwood‘s gameplay loop in a nutshell. I mean, how else are you going to get that rodent tail? Gathering materials can involve anything from chopping wood or crafting a trap that makes its target explode on impact. Trust me when I tell you that you are going to want to gather as many materials as possible as you travel between quests. There is a whole slew of items to craft and discover in Wytchwood. This system ensures that you cannot progress in the story without extensively using the crafting system in Wytchwood. Completing said quests first requires players to gather the necessary ingredients before crafting the desired quest item. In order to kill the big bad villains in the game and collect the requested souls, you will need to complete a slew of fetch quests. However, Wytchwood manages to make crafting the mechanism through which it tells its story. Gather, Craft, RepeatĬrafting is an important facet of many games. ![]() And while the gameplay loop lacks variety, the fetch quests all tell a unique story, often with a delightful touch of dark humor. However, it’s ultimately up to you how you go about gathering items and completing quests before you collect on one of those delicious souls. As the witch, players will work on acquiring those pesky souls four at a time. I also enjoyed the way that Wytchwood allows you to complete quests in any order you choose. The Docks are one of the many unique areas in Wytchwood. It’s so easy to put down and then pick right back up again where you left off. That’s actually one of the great things about Wytchood. Whenever I found myself getting frustrated having to travel to a specific location just to gather one specific ingredient I knew it was time to take a break. I found the seemingly endless fetch quests relaxing and they didn’t require a great amount of mental energy. However, I want to make the case that this doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I’m not going to sugarcoat it: yes the quests in Wytchwood are repetitive. One of the biggest complaints I’ve seen concerning Wytchwood is the repetitive nature of the game. I especially enjoyed her snarky dialogue that would not have felt as natural coming from a younger hero. Personally, I found it refreshing to play as an older character for once instead of the usual fresh-faced hero. Let’s just say the three pigs in this game aren’t so little and innocent.Īs for the hero of this story, instead of a knight in shining armor, we have an old witch and her grimoire. However, Wytchwood places its own dark spin on some classic tales and creates its own unique story. Wychwood builds its narrative around some familiar fairy tale characters such as Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs. ![]() It’s not just the game’s visuals that bring to mind visions of bedtime stories. ![]() The Big Bad Wolf is only one of the characters in Wytchwood that might be familiar to players. ![]()
